Hot Liquid Core
“YOU ARE STANDING ON A GIANT FLOATING BALL WITH A HOT LIQUID CORE, PLAN ACCORDINGLY”
This piece was inspired by a Martha Rich art puzzle and fueled by the flames of my soul and earth's core. As my first applique project, I decided to leave the rules at the door and try something I had absolutely no idea how to do. Deciding to embrace the roadblocks, imperfection, and continual movement of our "giant floating ball", I bound the quilt to the original shape of the pieced background.
This blue-grey background is pieced from upcycled sheet and shirt material while the almond and orange peel shapes were offcuts from cutting nested concave curves. You can see that the fabrics in these oblong shapes are bits from six to seven of my previous traditionally pieced curve projects. I find it interesting that this core/base color palette emerges from the offcuts of a series of quilted projects, yet they still play well with each other. The neutrals and value contrasts allow for the brighter more vibrant hues to shine - this is particularly apparent for the sole golden yellow piece in the lower middle left.
