36 Days of Quilt Type

36 Days of Type is a 36-day global project that allows artists to explore their unique interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. Graphic Designer Tim Hill (@timojhill, Draft Horse Studio) designed a wonderful modular alphabet, “typgram”, inspired by Tangram puzzles where each letter was made of a 4x4 grid, three shapes, and two colors. I used this alphabet and modular idea to take my own 36-day journey into pieced and quilted letterforms. Each day, I made and shared one letter on Instagram, finding one thing in my daily life to represent that letter. Having essentially a daily search-and-find, injected some adventure and excitement into each of those 36 days. Not only was it an artistic and creative journey learning about color, but it was a 36-day journal of my life for that period of time. These little letters travelled with me from home to Santa Barbara to Mt. Shasta and back.

Bonus puzzle: word scramble results in two words that describe this piece.

All curves were hand sewn using curvelets and curvelitos templates from Jen Carlton-Bailly and Fiona Johnstone, respectively. Fabrics were from the scrap bin, each pair chosen to investigate color theory. I am especially drawn to A, M, and 0 where the intersection of those colors seem to glow. Letters were hand-quilted with embroidery floss. Finished size is 24” x 24”.
