Division
This quilt came about during a contentious time in 2020 when I was feeling overwhelmed by division in my home country. It was also when COVID-19 was starting to really spread causing massive infection and death. The Division mini-quilt was a way for me to work through the emotions associated with these events.
The process of cutting and piecing the rough, scrappy, improv-like design of the red and orange fabrics was very freeing. In a way, this action in and of itself is it’s own act of division - severing scraps of fabric from each other into even smaller pieces. This kind of continued scrap cutting and piecing eventually leads to pieces too small to be used or put back together into something whole.
The overall view of larger circles dividing into smaller circles reflects cell division. In this case, how the COVID-19 virus hijacks human cell activity for it’s own means, replicating and continuing to spread regardless of who it infects. By the human body continuing to do what it needs to do to live, the virus will continue to wreak havoc on the human race.
