My second time participating in the Pantone Quilt Challenge, my first original foundation paper pieced curve design, and my first time attempting color transparencies. Using the FPP curve skills I learned in a Steph Skardal workshop at Quilt Con 2025, I created this piece from solids in my stash - one of which had to be similar to the Pantone Color of 2025, Mocha Mousse. I had just under a fat quarter of this neutral, so it had to be the transparency section for the design I planned. After auditioning various other colors, testing for hue and color value, I settled on this purple and golden yellow.

Then…I ran out of yellow. Then…I ran out of purple.

Where I ended up was not necessarily what I had planned, though only the best things come from a loosely followed plan. Machine and hand quilting designs echoed curves and continued to evoke the transparency and movement I was trying to create.

This piece won third place in the Wall-hanging category for the Pantone Quilt Challenge 2025. It was also displayed at the 2025 California State fair for winning an award in the Modern Quilt Category.
