Memory Quilt Coat

My Momma has always encouraged me to explore, learn new things, and be creative in life. Since I was young, she’s worn a green military field jacket liner from her Air Force days as her house coat, and throughout the years it has slowly been worn down. I wanted to make her a new house jacket that was comfortable but also continued to have meaning by using fabrics that represent important memories and aspects of her life.

In this jacket, I’ve incorporated cottons inherited from my grandmother and great-grandmother, her mother and grandmother, as a way to remember the many generations of strong women in our family. The cow fabric was used as a reminder of her youth growing up on a dairy farm. Floral and nature prints represent her love of the outdoors and recent adoption of bee-keeping. The black fabric was something I’d hand-printed with a stamp I carved from my own design - the creativity she’s inspired in me. There are many other fabrics I’ve used that I hope inspire her and serve as a reminder of good memories.

The garment pattern I’ve used to create this coat is the Tamarack Jacket from Grainline Studio. You can make your own memory coat using their pattern and your own design!
