Quilted Postcards

When I’m having a creative block, I like playing with fabric and thread to get out of my funk. Play is the best remedy for me - creation without rules, guidelines, or a goal. Creation without self-judgement of whether the result is “good” or “bad”. Creation without the expectation that others will see or appreciate these little works. I can’t “fail” at something that I never had any real expectations for in the first place. I can’t be a perfectionist about something that was never supposed to be perfect.

Like writing, sometimes 20-30 minutes of “putting something on the page” is the spark I need to find myself and remember that making things is a learning processes. I oftentimes find a state of flow when I’m creating these postcards. Any fiber in any interesting shape and orientation is fair game - a great way to use scraps, trimmings, orphan blocks.

I’ve made a few series from these play sessions. As I create them, themes start to emerge from the energy and movement of the pieces. Some of those below were inspired by wind, sound waves, light refraction, a path or journey, anxiety.

What energy speaks to you?
