Swash Zone

The swash zone is the area of beach where land and ocean meet, where waves run up the beach and peter out in their last bits of foamy energy. It is a transitional area that can be quite magical as land and sea creatures might occasionally encounter each other. It’s also a place where a lot of energy is released and the landscape constantly changes. The water ever so slowly eroding the land, moving the sand, seaweed, logs, rocks; making large things small and breaking down hard things one small step at a time.

The waves and movement are echoed in this quilt with radial symmetry and decreasing color value as you move away from the center of the design. This quilt was entirely made from scraps, stash, or secondhand fabrics. I block printed onto thrifted fabric for the back of the quilt with my own designed and hand-carved blocks.
